Campaign on Balanced Fertiliser Use and Soil Health Management under the MGMG program at Village Umeit, Meghalaya

As part of the MGMG (Team 2) programme, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Umiam, conducted an awareness and outreach programme on 14th May 2026 at Village Umeit, Meghalaya. The campaign highlighted the importance of balanced fertiliser application and soil health management through a series of lectures and interactions.
Balancing fertiliser use is important for achieving sustainable crop production, maintaining soil fertility, and protecting the environment. Balanced fertiliser use is a key component of sustainable agriculture and helps in achieving long-term soil productivity, environmental safety, and nutritional security. Adopting Balanced Fertiliser Use can be achieved through regular Soil Testing, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), crop diversification, incorporating green manures, Crop Rotation and Legumes, retaining crop residues, and adding organic amendments regularly. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to manage the rain received during the rainy season, which can be done through proper rainwater harvesting and the adoption of jalkund.
Different graphical presentations, in the form of posters, on various aspects of balanced fertiliser use and soil health management were also displayed to enhance the interface and understanding among farmers. Feedback from farmers revealed that such a program provides greater insight and understanding of the balanced use of fertiliser when growing crops, while also improving soil health management. About 27 farmers and 6 scientists participated in the program.
