Farmers-Scientist Interaction cum Input Distribution Programme Organized under Farmers FIRST at Mawshiatkhnam Village

        The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, organized a Farmers-Scientist Interaction cum Input Distribution Programme under the Farmers FIRST Programme at Mawshiatkhnam village, East Khasi Hills district. The programme aimed to strengthen the interface between scientists and farming communities for technology dissemination and input support. A total of 120 farmers from the village and surrounding areas actively participated in the event.
         The programme was graced by the presence of several eminent dignitaries:

  • Dr. R. R. Burman, Assistant Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR, New Delhi
  • Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Director, ICAR-ATARI Zone VII
  • Dr. A. K. Singha, Nodal Officer, Farmers FIRST Programme
  • Dr. B. P. Singh, Head, Division of Technology Assessment and Capacity Building, ICAR RC for NEH Region
        A team of scientists from various divisions of the institute also participated and engaged with the farmers.
        In his address, Dr. R. R. Burman encouraged farmers to work together with dedication to transform Mawshiatkhnam into a model village for sustainable agriculture. Dr. A. K. Mohanty emphasized participatory approaches and on-field demonstrations as the cornerstone of effective agricultural extension. Dr. A. K. Singha highlighted the importance of constant interaction between stakeholders for effective technology uptake. Dr. B. P. Singh outlined the division’s efforts toward capacity building and livelihood enhancement for tribal and smallholder farmers in the region.
        During the programme, farmers had the opportunity to interact directly with scientists to share their experiences and feedback. To support their agricultural activities, various inputs were distributed, including:
  • Vanaraja poultry chicks
  • Fish fingerlings
  • Biopesticides
  • Seasonal vegetable seeds
        Mawshiatkhnam is an adopted village under the Farmers FIRST initiative, aimed at holistic development through integrated technological and institutional support.
        The team also visited the Farmers’ Amenity Centre for Tribal (FACT) at Umrynjah village. Developed by ICAR, FACT is a unique extension model that blends community governance, research integration, and a broad spectrum of support services to address the multifaceted needs of tribal farmers. The visiting team interacted with the office bearers of the centre and appreciated the grassroots efforts made under this community-led initiative.
         This programme reaffirmed ICAR's commitment to bringing science closer to the farming community and promoting inclusive and participatory rural development in the North Eastern region.
