Training cum Input Distribution Programme on “Livelihood Improvement of Tribal farmers of Meghalaya through Scientific Method of Cultivation of Spice, Tuber, Vegetable and Fruit Crops” at ICAR Research Complex NEH Region, Umiam under AICRP Spices

        A three days training cum input distribution programme on “Livelihood Improvement of Tribal farmers of Meghalaya through Scientific Method of Cultivation of Spice, Tuber, Vegetable and Fruit Crops" was organised at Horticulture Section, DSRE, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya under AICRP on Spices on 5th to 7th March, 2025. The program was organised with the objective to disseminate technical knowhow on the advanced scientific method of cultivation of spice, tuber, vegetable and fruit crops. A total of 26 farmers from three districts (Marngar, Lawmei and West Jantia Hills) of Meghalaya participated in the programme. The participant farmers were given both theoretical and hands-on training on advance scientific method of cultivation of vegetables such as pro-tray nursery raising, hydroponics and protected cultivation, seed rhizome treatment of turmeric and ginger, grafting, major insect pest and diseases of important horticultural crops. Exposure visits to Engineering Section, DSRE was also arranged to familiarize the farmers to farm operational such as turmeric slicer and washer developed by the institute. As a part of input distribution the farmers were distributed with vegetable seeds (brijal, coriander, cucumber), irrigation cans and turmeric seed rhizomes. The beneficiaries appreciated the efforts of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region for conducting such programme and introducing them to new technologies. The program was coordinated by Dr. M. Bilashini, Dr. H.D. Talang, Dr. R. Teja, and Dr. Rumki Ch. Sangma.
