As part of the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign) being
observed from 1–30 June 2026, the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Umiam, in collaboration with KVK Ri Bhoi,
organized an awareness programme on balanced fertilizer use and sustainable agriculture. The event was attended by 92 village headmen from
East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi districts.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. G. Kadirvel, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region,
highlighted the campaign's objectives of promoting balanced fertilizer use, improving soil health and encouraging sustainable farming practices.
He emphasized the role of village headmen in spreading awareness among farmers and encouraged the adoption of bio-agents, green manuring, natural
farming and urban farming practices.
Dr. B. P. Singh, Head, DTAC and Nodal Officer of the programme, urged village leaders to equip themselves
with scientific knowledge on nutrient management and informed participants about farmer-friendly technologies developed by ICAR to enhance productivity while
conserving soil health and the environment.
Earlier, Dr. Md. Mokidul Islam, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Ri Bhoi, stressed the importance of green
manuring, organic inputs and balanced fertilizer application for sustainable agriculture. The programme also featured lectures on natural farming by Dr. B. Makdoh
and soil health management and scientific horticultural practices by Dr. H. Rymbai. The initiative forms part of ICAR’s ongoing efforts under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan
to promote climate-resilient and resource-efficient farming across the North Eastern Region.
