One Day Awareness Programme on Balanced Fertilizer Use at Mawpun Village, Umsning Block, RiBhoi District, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam

An awareness program on the balanced use of fertilizers was conducted by Team 1 of MGMG (Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav) in Mawpun village on 30th April 2026 to educate farmers about efficient nutrient management practices as part of the ongoing National Awareness Campaign on Adoption of Science-Based Nutrient Management (Balanced Use of Fertilizers) launched by ICAR. The initiative aimed to improve soil health, enhance crop productivity, improve economic efficiency and reduce environmental degradation caused by improper fertilizer use. The programme was conducted on farmers’ field and was interactive in nature. During the interaction, the farmers were informed about the concept of balanced fertilization to create the awareness about the importance of macro and micronutrients. Farmers were also encouraged to test their soil to determine nutrient deficiencies and avoid unnecessary fertilizer application. The concept of Integrated Nutrient Management was also translated to encourage the use of organic manure along with chemical fertilizers. The importance for utilization of weather data for decision making on fertilizer application was also stressed during the interaction. Using weather forecasts helps farmers schedule fertilizer application during optimal conditions, ensuring better nutrient absorption by crops, minimizing wastage, lowering input costs, and reducing environmental pollution. The farmers of the village usually used FYM and pig dung compost along with little chemical fertilizers. They were unaware about the significance of micro-nutrients and biofertilizers. Folders on Efficient nutrient management in bilingual (English and Khasi) were distributed for providing ready guidance to the farmers. The programme was attended by 15 numbers of farmers and was coordinated by Dr. Debasish Chakraborty, Sr. Scientist, Agricultural Meteorology; Dr. Hijam Jiten Singh, Scientist(SS), Farm Machinery & Power and Dr. Anjoo Yumnam, Scientist (SS), Agricultural Economics.
